Outdoor Bench Seats
Outdoor bench seats for the garden, porch, deck or front entry. Most are solid timber, with steel, cast metal and poly rattan options, and some have cushions, storage underneath or a swing frame.
Widths run from compact 2 seaters to 5ft (about 150cm) 3 seaters.
How wide should an outdoor bench be?
Allow about 50cm per person; a 115–120cm bench seats two and a 150cm bench seats three.
| Width | Seats | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 120cm | 2 | Porch, front door, balcony |
| About 150cm (5ft) | 3 | Garden path, long side of a table |
| Storage bench | 2–3 | Holding cushions or garden tools |
| Swing bench | 2–3 | Pergola or under a tree |
Is a wooden or metal garden bench better?
Timber feels warmer and suits gardens; metal is slimmer and needs less upkeep.
- Solid wood (acacia, fir, pine): classic look; oil or stain each year.
- Steel and cast metal: slim, heavy and steady; look for a powder-coated finish.
- Poly rattan: light, usually with a seat cushion.
Are outdoor benches with storage waterproof?
Most are water-resistant rather than fully waterproof, so keep them under cover or lift the contents off the floor of the box.
They are good for cushions, pool toys and hoses. Check the inside dimensions in the listing if you need to fit something specific.
How do I care for a timber outdoor bench?
Oil or stain it at the start of summer, and keep its feet off wet soil.
Standing it on pavers or a deck stops the legs rotting. Tighten bolts once a year.
What should I check before I order an outdoor bench?
Check the width, seat height, backrest style and whether cushions are included.
A seat height of 42–46cm matches most outdoor dining tables if you plan to use the bench at a table. Benches without a backrest tuck under the table when not in use. Armrests make it easier for older family members to sit down and stand up. Most benches arrive flat-packed with the tools needed for assembly.
Swing benches need a level base and space for the seat to move without hitting a wall.
Can I pay it off?
